Keeping you and your horse happy!

The time for vacations, lakes, beaches, BBQs, bikinis, and FIREWORKS is upon us. As horse owners, this can be a stressful time of year of keeping horses cool (see previous post), and pest free (see previous post).

The 4th of July brings in its own problems with loud bangs, bright flashes and screaming kids - none of which seem to agree with our horses. However, a little preparation goes a long way in making sure our equine friends are safe and secure during the 4th celebrations.

Here are a few tips to keep horses safe:

-Know thy neighbor - have a walk around your neighbor hood and talk with people. Let them know that there are horses nearby (if they didn't realize it already), and ask that they keep that in mind before setting off that pack of cherrybombs next to your fence.

-Have a plan. Make sure you or someone you know is nearby to watch your animals during prime fire-works hours.

-Turn on the radio as a distraction.

-If there is a remote chance that your horses may panic and escape, attach your phone number and address to a breakaway halter with duct tape.

-Sedate horses if necessary. Discuss with your vet the best option for a mild sedation to prevent your horse from injuring itself or others.

-Consider horse-y earplugs! POMMS (Premium Equine Ear Plugs) are available from Dover (click here) and are washable, reusable and comfortable!

-Try keeping your horse occupied with hay or other food. For some horses, food will be enough of a distraction, others, not so much...

-Make sure that you have a halter, lead and first aid kit on hand, should an emergency situation develop.

Some simple planning ahead and prep work will go a long way in making sure that you and your horses both have a happy Holiday weekend.
